Jeremy Ivan I. Dharmasena

Jeremy Ivan Dharmasena is the second son of Mr. Ridgeway Dharmasena and Mrs. Rose Inigo Dharmasena. Born in Manila to an Ivatan mother and a Sri Lankan father, although he is only 13, he shows incredible potential, speaking English, Tagalog and Ivatan fluently. He was valedictorian of the Elementary class of the 1st Payuhuan nu Kapaypinta, the 1st indigenous arts training program in Basco, Batanes. His talent and leadership skills.

Jeremy uses acrylic paint and watercolor to paint animals, landscapes and other paintings. His father is also a painter and Jeremy has inherited his talent, showing great talent in photography as well – from the 1st time he picked up a camera, he was shooting as well or better as the adults in the class. His ambition is to be a great artist, even though many people discourage him and tells him to get another course in college, he firmly states, “I will never give up my dreams.”

Reydante E. Cabizon

Reydante Evangelista Cabizon is the youngest son of Mr. Daniel Falces Cabizon and Mrs. Silvina Evangelista Cabizon. He comes from a family of Ivatan known for their artistic talents and although his mother is Ilocana and he was born in Lanao Del Sur, he feels his Ivatan blood strongly and considers Batanes his hometown.

Reydante can speak Tagalog, Bisaya and Ivatan. He was in grade school when he discovered his potential in the arts, with a long history of awards culminating in 3rd place win at the 2005 Pacita Abad painting competition at the college level.

Reydante paints in acrylic and his favorite subjects to paint are the landscape and seascape of Batanes. Some of his compositions are imaginative and he considers oil his second medium as he explores the wonders of paint.

Most of his paintings are in the realistic style. He attempts to capture every detail of his composition. He is a student well on the way to becoming a great artist and dreams of being well known as an indigenous Ivatan artist.

Rhodelyn Come

Rhodelyn Come is 12 years old. The daughter of Flordeliz G. Come and Henry Come, she is of Ivatan descent on both sides. She has been painting since she was 5 years old, making it her passion – her room is devoid of the usual teenage paraphernalia, instead resembling a working artist’s studio, with a bed cluttered with paints and easels all around. In the 6th grade she joined the Pacita Abad painting contest and won 3rd prize in the elementary division. She was also valedictorian of the Elementary class of the 1st Payuhuan nu Kapaypinta, the 1st indigenous arts training program in Basco, Batanes and an assistant trainer for other youth in the remote islands of Itbayat and Sabtang.

She was given the accolade Mistress of the Mural and Goddess of the Clouds for her contributions to the 10-foot by 6-foot mural that will be exhibited in the Museo Pambata in November. Her desire is to paint Ivatan culture to show how Ivatan can maintain their culture and way of life, even in the modern age.

She prefers acrylic paint, and although she is still young, she is adept in charcoal, crayon, pastels, poster color and watercolor. Rhodelyn paints designs and abstract but above all she loves realism so that she can paint just what she knows about being Ivatan, using stories from her grandmother to inspire her.

Rhodelyn’s goal is to travel to all the places in Batanes to find Ivatan fossils, artifacts of culture to paint, in order to show other people how beautiful Batanes is.

Teresa Gordo

Teresa is a young artist of Ivatan descent on her father’s side and Ilocana on her mothers. 19 years old, she is a 3rd year drafting student at Batanes State College. She speaks Tagalog, English and Ivatan fluently. Her preferred medium is acrylic paints, however she is exploring oil, watercolor and pastels. She usually paints in a combination of realistic and abstract styles and has a strong sense of color.

In her own words, she “loves to paint where my eyes don’t get bored in colors. I just began painting in 2004 and I don’t know if I’m any good,” she notes modestly “but my aunt Auriele Loreto and my brother Virgilio Gordo are both good painters, so I woke up one day and decided I wanted to be like them, so I joined the painting class in school and discovered my talent.”

Teresa’s first paintings sold immediately, and continue to do so today, despite the strong competition from the other talented artists of Batanes and during her first entry in the Pacita Abad Painting Competition in February 2006 she won 2nd place in the College Level. Her gifts also led to her being hired as one of the first indigenous youth arts trainers by Margarita Certeza Garcia, a US Fulbright Scholar based in Basco, Batanes to develop children’s arts for livelihood. Teresa was promoted to be a lead trainer for the remote island of Sabtang where she led a group of 4 other trainers in a summer elementary school training program. As a student she hopes one day of being able to afford going to a better known school for the arts, but is staying in Basco to work to help her brothers and sisters finish school. As an artist, she dreams of sharing her life with others through painting and hopes one day to be well known for her art.

Javier A. Ponce

Javier A. Ponce is the 3rd child of Aurelia and Herminigildo Ponce. At 6’3” tall he is a proud example of pure Ivatan strength. Javier was raised in Itbayat, Batanes the northernmost and most remote island in the Philippines. Javier began painting in grade school and honed his talents in college, despite the hardships of being one of 6 children.

Javier considers oil his primary medium although he also paints in acrylic comfortably due to the price of paints. He has won numerous awards throughout his school years and his work attempts to capture every detail of his compositions. Well known for his abstract tribal style, he also works realistically. He dreams of being a well-known Ivatan artist.

Jaypee Buasangilan Portez

is the second son of Mr. Ferdinand Arsol Portez and Mrs. Flordeliza Busangan Portez. He was born in Mahatao, Batanes and lived until the age of 8 in San Pedro Laguna, when he returned to his hometown. Jaypee can speak Tagalog and Ivatan and was discovered as an artist in the 3rd grade when he won 1st place in the Division Level Competition for his art.

Jaypee paints in acrylic and his favorite style was realistic, but he has recently been attracted to the abstract style and has broken new ground in developing a uniquely Ivatan indigenous art style. At the young age of 18, his sterling qualities and talent led to his being named valedictorian of the 1st Payuhuan nu Kapaypinta, the 1st indigenous arts training program in Basco, Batanes, later becoming the lead trainer of Mahatao during the summer trainings. He dreams of becoming a famous painter, a dream that is soon to be realized.

Roland Gonzales

Roland, commonly known as ‘Olan’ never knew how special Batanes was until he visited Manila as the 1st Ivatan to be offered a full scholarship at UP Diliman in fine arts.

He writes, “The majestic mount Iraya, the verdant hills, fresh air, the seas and its beautiful people. They are all part of my life. I was born on the 31st of January, 1978 in Basco, the capital town of Batanes. My parents, Marcelino Gonzales and Irene Gonzales are both native’s of Itbayat, the northernmost remote island of the Philippines. I am the 8th and youngest son of 10 siblings, 6 boys and 4 girls. My father is retired as a government employee and now helps my mother with her handicraft business.”

Olan comes from a long line of talented indigenous artists. His mother has been recognized as one of the master indigenous basket makers of the Philippines by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and his genius in realism emerged very early in life. Stories of his painting talent as a child are legend in his hometown, from the time he painted Jesus while he was temporarily struck blind and in the hospital, to the detailed architectural sketches he produces with no training on wood boards when asked to help design the 1st Ivatan gallery, Even his scrabble score is exceptional, routinely scoring over 300 although English is only his 4th language, after his native Itbayat, Ivatan and Tagalog.

Although he dropped out of University twice due to cultural pressures, he has a standing invitation to return should he ever wish to leave the beauties of Batanes for the pollution of Manila. Dr. Francisco Datar of the College of Anthropology hired him as an artist during his brief stay in Manila and famous visual artists such as UP CFA professor Jerry Tan and National Artist Mauro Santos (Malang) have encouraged his art. He has won many awards and accolades for his painting, including 1st place in the Pacita Abad Foundation, OSY division last February, 1st Prize in the Regional Level for DTI Consumer month and 3rd in the logo making contest for KSK, a local health foundation.

Olan writes, “Whenever I was in Manila, I always wanted to go back home as soon as I could to my native land, Batanes. Now with the help of the Pacita Abad and Kalinawa foundations I can see my dreams realized a circle of Ivatan Indigenous Artists that will paint itself towards the Art World, yet remain rooted in our history and culture. We will show the world the beauty and art of our land, our people and our culture. This way I can repay the life and inspiration that Batanes has given me. I dream of Batanes as a world in balance with man and nature.”
